Spanish Fork, Utah | Ancestor Recreation Portraits

I’m getting behind in my blogging!   Here’s a TBT session that never made it to the blog.  We did this shoot last March as a Mother’s Day gift.   Amanda Dixon was our HMUA and she did an AMAZING job!!  I love working with that girl!

There are a lot of challenges when recreating an old photo.  Capturing the look of that time period in hair, makeup, and wardrobe is difficult but so important!  It’s definitely worth investing in a good HMUA!

Our model, Rebekka, told us that her grandmother had this portrait taken when she was 20.  Her mother sent her to the photo studio by herself and when she got there, the photographer put a window drape around her shoulders to give the appearance of a fancy dress.  When the portraits were developed, her conservative mother was very upset with the off-shoulder look!  We also used a window drape to create the look.

We also paid close attention to the backdrop, the posing and expression of her face, the camera angle and depth of field, and most importantly- the LIGHTING!  We tried a few different light setups and I think we got really close with the final product.  The post production work also required attention to detail.  The original photo is not just black and white, it has a bluish coloring to it which was difficult to match.  There were also some softening techniques applied to the original that I was able to reproduce in photoshop and I also added, of course, extra grain.

How did we do?  Rebekka’s mother was thrilled with the outcome-  and it was an honor to be involved in this family project!   I would LOVE to do something like this again!
